• When and why did the distct decide to engage in DEI?

    Posted by:

The formation of this committee is one of our district goals for the year (goal #4.) The reason we started this work is simply because as a school district, we are preparing our students to enter a very interconnected world and economy, and valuing the ideals of DEI will be important for the future success of our students and our district. A great many companies also are engaged in this work because they realize that it makes them stronger and more competitive.

  • What is the DEI Task Force?

A representative stakeholder group of about 27 people who expressed interest and were selected to begin a conversation about DEI in Eastchester Schools. The group will meet six times over the next six months to examine the New York State Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Education Framework and have conversations about what next steps might make sense for Eastchester Schools to consider.

  • How were Task Force members selected?

    Posted by:

An invitation went out to the community. Over 50 community members and about 15 staff members responded that they had some interest in participating. Interested individuals were asked to reply with a few words about their interest. Late responses were not considered. The superintendent reviewed responses and sought to create a group of about 25 that was as balanced, diverse and representative as possible. It was not possible to accept all community members who had interest without making the group excessively large, however we will reach out with any future opportunities. All individuals received a response.

  • Is the Task Force about bringing Critical Race Theory into the schools?

    Posted by:

Critical Race Theory is a very hot topic nationally right now. It is a theory about systemic racism that may exist in societies. The Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Framework does not specifically reference CRT but neither does it avoid the topic of systemic racism. The Task Force did spend a few minutes in it's first meeting touching on what the thorory is, because we felt it was important to address this controverial term head-on. However, we simply talked about the origin and definition of the theory. Rather than getting caught up in the CRT debate, the Task Force is soley focused on digging into the NY Framework, getting the group's thoughts on which parts of it might be important for Eastchester Schools to consider. That's it.
