Dr. Villanueva Discusses Eastchester's Encouraging Test Scores, AP Enrollment Numbers

Dear Eastchester Families,

As we begin this new school year, I want to take a moment to share some exciting news about the progress our students are making. Over the past four years, we have witnessed remarkable growth in both our math and ELA scores, signaling not just improvement, but momentum, a clear elevation of the work we are doing together across the entire district.

In ELA, proficiency has risen steadily, reaching 78% across grades 3–8, up from 67% just three years ago. This growth reflects the collective efforts of our teachers, students, and families, as well as the strategic support we’ve put in place. To put a couple key highlights in context, our fourth graders achieved an 85% proficiency rate in ELA, marking a 10-point gain from last year, while third graders climbed to 82% proficiency, a 14-point increase year over year. Across the middle grades, we also saw strong growth, with seventh graders improving by 15 points to reach 77% proficiency in ELA, reflecting both their hard work and the effectiveness of our instructional support.

In math, our district has continued to perform at a high level, maintaining an impressive 81% proficiency rate across grades 3–8, with notable gains among our students with disabilities (+5% year over year) and English Language Learners (+12% over the last two years). These improvements affirm that our targeted interventions are making a difference for all learners.

Equally encouraging are the trends we see in Advanced Placement (AP) participation and performance. In just the past three years, total AP enrollment has grown by 25%, with courses such as Psychology (+155%), Computer Science A (+150%), and United States History (+51%) seeing major increases. Not only are more students enrolling, but they are excelling: last year, Eastchester students consistently outperformed both the New York State and global averages. For example, in Calculus AB, 96% of our students scored a 3 or higher compared to 61% statewide, and in Computer Science Principles, 96% achieved a 3 or higher versus 64% statewide.

These numbers tell a powerful story of growth, access, and success. They show us what is possible when we combine the dedication of our educators with the determination of our students and families. And yet, as proud as we are, the work has only just begun. Looking ahead, we are deepening our investment in teaching and learning. With the expansion of instructional coaches in math at the elementary level and department chairs at the middle and high school, we are strengthening the foundation of our programs. We are also expanding opportunities for our older students through the introduction of the Seal of Biliteracy, the Seal of Civic Readiness, and the addition of AP Seminar. Next year we will introduce AP Research, allowing Eastchester students the opportunity to earn the prestigious AP Capstone Distinction.

All of this is anchored in our shared vision for Eastchester: Four Campuses, Four Pillars, One Vision – Elevate Eastchester. These highlights speak to transformative ways we are elevating the educational experiences of all students. Our other pillars which include, Wellness, Community, and Space, will continue to guide us as we build a district that supports the whole child.

Together, we are writing a story of momentum, growth, and elevation, one that honors our past successes while looking boldly toward the future. Thank you for being a vital part of this journey.

Sincerely,

Dr. Alison VIllanueva
