A Message from Dr. Villanueva: Notes About Weather-Related Decisions

A Message from Dr. Villanueva: Notes About Weather-Related Decisions

WEATHER-RELATED DECISIONS AFFECTING THE SCHOOL DAY
November 2025

Dear Eastchester Faculty, Families, and Community,

As the seasons change and we prepare for the arrival of winter, I would like to share important information about how weather-related decisions that impact the school day are made.

The safety of our students and staff remains EUFSD’s highest priority. When inclement weather is expected, the District carefully monitors conditions to ensure timely and accurate communication with all families and staff.

How Weather-Related Decisions Are Made

EUFSD works closely with the Town of Eastchester Highway Department, our Facilities and Maintenance Department, Transportation Supervisor, Bus Companies, and local weather service providers to gather and evaluate information before making any adjustments to the school schedule.

In determining whether a schedule change is necessary, we consider the following factors, always with safety as our guiding principle:

  • Road conditions: including bus routes and general drivability

  • Sidewalks, parking lots, and snow removal status

  • Precipitation and visibility levels

  • Temperature, wind conditions, and potential power outages

  • Weather forecasts throughout the day

Why Weather Decisions May Differ Across Districts

Please note that neighboring districts may sometimes make different weather-related decisions. While local superintendents communicate and share information during inclement weather events, each district must make decisions based on its own specific conditions—such as road safety, building readiness, transportation status, and forecast data. Therefore, all weather-related decisions for Eastchester schools are made based on conditions within Eastchester itself while we also try to stay consistent with districts around us.

Possible Schedule Changes

If weather conditions are deemed unsafe for travel or normal operations, the District may adjust the school schedule. Possible changes include delayed openings, early dismissals, or school closures, as outlined in the chart below.

One (1) hour delay

  • Buses will arrive at stops approximately one (1) hour later than the usual time.
  • Students should not be dropped off at school at their usual time.
  • Breakfast and lunch are served at EMS and EHS.

Two (2) hour delay

  • Buses will arrive at stops approximately two (2) hours later than the usual time.
  • Students should not be dropped off at school at their usual time.
  • Breakfast and lunch are served at EMS and EHS.

Three (3) hour delay

  • Buses will arrive at stops approximately three (3) hours later than the usual time.
  • Students should not be dropped off at school at their usual time.
  • Breakfast is only served at Eastchester High School
  • Lunch is served at all schools.

Early Dismissal

  • Information about emergency early dismissals is shared via phone, email, and local television stations prior to 11:00 am.
  • When there is an early dismissal, all after school sporting events and student activities will be canceled.

Emergency Early Dismissal or Emergency Closure After a Delay is Called

  • In some circumstances, a delay may be upgraded to a school closing if unsafe weather conditions persist.
  • All families will be contacted by phone and notifications will be made on local television stations, generally prior to 11:00 a.m.

School closing

  • School closures are typically made by 4:45 am the morning of.
  • Bus/Transportation companies, families, and staff will typically receive notification via phone and on local television stations by 4:45 am.
  • When possible, advance school closure decisions (the prior evening) will be made to provide families as much time to plan for the following day.

* However, with the uncertainty of weather forecasts, and the additional factors that must be accounted for – building readiness, bussing, etc. a call in advance is not always possible.

Communication

Eastchester UFSD utilizes several tools to communicate information regarding weather-related closings or delays.

It is our goal as a district to provide clear and accurate information consistently throughout the year to minimize disruption as much as possible while always ensuring the safety of our students and staff. Thank you for your continued support of our schools and if you have any questions please do not hesitate to reach out directly to your child’s school.

Sincerely,

Dr. Villanueva
