A Message from Dr. Villanueva on Snow Days and the District Calendar

A Message from Dr. Villanueva on Snow Days and the District Calendar

Dear EUFSD Families and Students,

Welcome back from Winter Recess and thank you for your patience as we all move through ongoing winter weather and savor today’s sunshine together.

Decisions regarding school delays or closures will continue to be made by 5:00 a.m. and communicated via ParentSquare. It is our number one priority to keep our students and faculty safe by making decisions as best as possible with the information available.

I have received several inquiries regarding the status of the school calendar for students in light of recent winter weather. Please see the current status of the 2025–2026 school calendar below:

  • The last scheduled day of school for students is presently Friday, June 26, 2026 as adopted by the Board of Education.
  • As the calendar is written, it states that the district will shorten Spring Recess one day at a time, beginning Monday, March 30, and continuing through that week as needed, when we move beyond the two snow days embedded in the calendar.
  • At this time, we have had three (3) snow days.
  • The calendar is structured to provide 183 instructional days for students, while the statutory requirement is 180 days.
  • On Monday evening, Governor Hochul released a waiver application for New York State school districts that may fall below the 180-day requirement. EUFSD intends to apply for this waiver if we risk falling below 180 days.

The Board of Education will discuss taking action to reduce the student calendar by up to one day (from 183 to 182 instructional days) so the district can recoup Monday, March 30, thereby preserving the full Spring Recess for our students and families.

If no additional snow days occur and the Board reduces the calendar by one student day, June 26, 2026 will remain the last day of school, and Spring Recess will remain intact for five days, from Monday, March 30 through Friday, April 2, 2026, for students and families.

If additional snow days occur, we will have two more days remaining until we reach 180 student days and the Board will take action accordingly in accordance with the requirements of the Governor’s waiver.

We will continue to keep you informed of any updates or changes as they arise.

Sincerely,

Dr. V
