Eagles Support Joseph Callari in "Heart of a Giant" Nomination
You might not see Joseph Callari taking snaps for Eastchester’s varsity football squad this year, but his importance to the team, the program, and the community has been immeasurable.

Callari, a senior at EHS, was recently nominated for the USA Football “Heart of a Giant” award, a testament to his dedication, work-ethic and passion . The award—which is presented by the Hospital for Special Surgery and the New York Giants, showcases Tri-State high school tackle and flag football athletes, student managers, student mascots, or other designated student team members who demonstrate that “extra something special.”
Eastchester’s Head Varsity Football Coach Fred DiCarlo said that nominating Callari for the honor seemed like an obvious choice. As the general manager for the team’s football squad, Callari has been a constant on the practice field and in the weight room since the spring, fully embracing his role within the program.
“From the time he joined, he’s been here every single day. He’ll do conditioning and lift weights with the team, and he’ll serve as our snapper during spring workouts when other guys are playing different sports,” said DiCarlo. “He’s just part of the team and the other guys really look out for him and respond to that.”
Senior captain Dylan Burbridge said that Callari’s presence has been a true boost to the Eagles, who have taken a cue from the way he approaches each day.
“I’ve known Joe since fifth grade, we went to Greenvale together, and then we got closer in high school,” said Burbridge “Since he joined the football program, he’s been there every single day, working out with the team, and it’s inspiring because he works harder than anyone.
DiCarlo added that having Callari proudly representing the Eagles is something that speaks not only to the senior’s dedication, but also to the very best lessons one can learn from participation in high school athletics.
“I love having people like Joe, coaching them, and having them involved with the team,” said DiCarlo. “We preach that everyone’s included, and just as someone contributing to the program as a manager, I think the guys really respond to that.
“This is important, not in terms of wins and losses, but in terms of being a part of something that is bigger than yourself and learning life lessons,” he continued. “Seeing the way the team has rallied around him and taken him in, that’s really special.”
