Homecoming Highlights Community Bonds

Homecoming Highlights Community Bonds

There are few words that evoke the quintessential high school experience quite like “Homecoming.”

Last week, Eastchester’s secondary campus pulsed with energy as the Eagles celebrated this yearly event. But Homecoming Weekend isn’t only a time to highlight the dedication and hard work of student-athletes, it’s also an opportunity to reaffirm the bonds that tie this unique and vibrant community together.

This idea of unity was on display last weekend, as Eastchester community members turned out in droves to cheer on the district’s varsity sports teams and celebrate their love for the town.  The varsity football, boys soccer, and girls soccer teams were all in action on Friday and Saturday, playing under the portable lights set up on the Eastchester High School turf field. But the sheer number of weekend events—which included a junior pep rally for the district’s younger students on Friday night—and spectators meant that it wasn’t just business as usual for the Eagles’ athletic department, noted Director of Physical Education, Health and Athletics, Mike Ramponi.

“We worked very closely with the Eastchester Sports Club and their president, Mario Dell’Aera, to organize the events, from the games to the junior pep rally, the food trucks and DJs,” said Ramponi. “With everything we did, there was something for every age group.”

Friday's junior pep rally, in particular, featured food, face-painting and games—including an obstacle course supplied by No Limit Ninja Warrior—activities that heightened the anticipation for the weekend’s sporting events. The result, said EUFSD Superintendent Dr. Alison Villanueva, was a weekend that told the tale of community spirit.

“Eastchester High School’s campus is a hub for our residents; it is a busy, living space where our community can come together, and Homecoming was a perfect example of that,” she said. “From families rooting on our amazing teams, honoring veterans for their longtime service, volunteer groups like the Sports Club selling concessions and encouraging school spirit, it was amazing to watch families and students spending time together under the lights.”

And while Eastchester’s home teams didn’t end up on the right side of the ledger—although boys soccer managed to earn a draw against a 10-1-4 Irvington team—it did little to dampen the enthusiasm surrounding the weekend, something Dr. Villanueva admitted she was thrilled to see, especially as this was her first experience at an Eastchester Homecoming celebration.

“I truly believe the walls of teaching and learning are not limited to the classroom,” she said. “Authentic, meaningful teaching and learning in the real world happens in all spaces at all different times of the day and with lots of different people. As part of our vision, the fourth pillar is community.”

Dr. Villanueva added that the last few weeks—during which time she has celebrated Homecoming weekend, attended the Columbus Day Festival at Lake Isle and participated in the Eastchester 5k road race—have been an eye-opener that provided her better insight into the true spirit of Eastchester. As the year goes on, she said, she can’t wait to see more of the unique events and traditions that hold a place in the heart of all Eagles.

“Being out in the community, showing up and taking part, is a way to say, "I see how hard you worked, or what you just achieved, or how much time you volunteered to bring this opportunity to the Eastchester community,’” she said.
