Season of Giving
Students and staff members across the Eastchester School District kicked off the holiday season, filling stockings for soldiers with snacks, small games and toiletry items.
Eastchester Teachers Association Executive Vice President Carlene LoVecchio is organizing the Stockings for Soldiers project across the District. She sends many of the stockings to the Never Forget Foundation. The stockings are then shipped overseas, and some soldiers returning home will also receive them. Still more are sent to the American Legion Post in Pearl River.
Kindergarten students in Nicole Ullrich’s class filled their stockings before the Thanksgiving holiday. “The purpose of this project was to show how we are thankful for their service and to make a connection to Veterans Day,” said Ullrich. The students learned that not everyone could share the holidays with their families.
“I think it will be hard and sad (to be without family during the holidays). This will make them happy and grateful,” said Anne Hutchinson fifth grader Kylie Reardon who filled stockings to the brim with her fellow Student Council members.
All stockings are due no later than Dec. 17 and should be sent to the attention of Carlene LoVecchio at Greenvale or Ed Gruber at the High School.
