Eastchester Middle School Students Learn More About Communication
Eastchester Middle School students learned a skill that they can use throughout their lives, how to communicate.
As part of the Social Emotional Learning curriculum, School Counselor Annie Schmitt teaches a class called Tools For Life Challenges (TLC) to help them navigate real-world situations and learn how to positively cope with challenges.
April’s lessons focus on healthy communication and students are learning different strategies to set boundaries, to express wants and needs and to clearly express emotions.
Eighth grader Aidan Ruane said the TLC class is important. “It is good to have life skills and this class is different from others. It prepares you not just for a job, but for life.”
Schmitt divided the class into small groups where they chose a scenario and then discussed how to communicate their needs in a non-confrontational manner. Students spoke about how they could ask for a raise at a job or make a simple request to a friend or adult and feel confident.
