Waverly Students Head Outdoors for Storytime and Science
Students in Sherry Schwartz's remote first grade class at Waverly returned to the school last week to meet each other in person and enjoy storytime and outdoor planting.
The first graders sat in the outdoor classroom and listened to a reading of "The Tiny Seed" by Eric Carle. After planting flower seeds, the students returned home with their colorful pots ready to observe and write in their planting journals.
"The students were excited to see each other and meet their classmates," said Mrs. Schwartz. "The lesson provided a hands-on approach to science and E.L.A. and an opportunity to enjoy time with their classmates outdoors."
There is much excitement as the first graders watch their plants grow and share their progress in the virtual classroom each morning.
When asked what they liked about planting, student Aaron Tin responded, "I like the plant because it will grow into a big flower. I feel so happy and excited when I see it grow. I never knew it would grow like this. I water it, and I move it because I see it turns to the sun."
Classmate Clark Ding said, "My plan is to wait until it has a flower to plant it outside and wait for a bee to come to pollinate it so I can see how they do it."
