Players Club Eyes November Opening of 'One Man, Two Guvnors'

Secret identities, love triangles, and misunderstandings might sound like a recipe for disaster, but—as the Eastchester community will find out next month—they may also be the main ingredients for an uproarious, witty comedy that threatens to leave the audience rolling in the aisles.

On Nov. 15, the EHS Players Club will raise the curtain on its production of “One Man, Two Guvnors,” a 2011 farce written by Richard Bean and originally performed in London’s West End Theater. For members of the troupe—who have been working tirelessly to get the play on its feet since September—the group’s latest offering may just be its funniest yet.

The play—which was adapted from an 18th century Commedia del Arte work—follows the travails of Francis Henshall, who finds himself in the employ of two different masters and centers around his efforts to keep the two from crossing paths as hilarity and confusion ensue.

12th grader Jack Salcito—appearing in his fourth fall comedy —said he is eager for opening night and excited to see the audience’s reaction to a play defined by its rapier-sharp dialogue.

“It’s a mature show for high schoolers to perform, so it’s a different experience than other shows and gives us a real opportunity to find our characters,” said Salcito. “A lot of the humor in the show is very British, and even though it’s been challenging as an actor to navigate that, it has been a really fun challenge.”

Salcito’s cast-mate Lara Ungaro concurred with that assessment and added that she thinks that although audience members may not be all that familiar with the source material—as opposed to last year’s production of “The Play that Goes Wrong”—she believes the good-natured charm of the show is unavoidable.

“When we did last year’s show, it felt like everyone knew it coming in, but people may not know this one as well,” said Ungaro. “I think it’s important that they give it a chance, because it is new, different and fun, and it’s all about the humor.”

The play will premiere on Friday, Nov. 15 and conclude on Sunday, Nov. 17. On Friday and Saturday night, the curtain will raise at 7 p.m., while the Sunday matinee is scheduled for 2 p.m.

And while the cast is eagerly anticipating opening night, for the seniors in the troupe, the realization that this will be their final fall comedy will make these next two weeks even more memorable.

“Most of the scenes are set, we’re all off-book and have been for a while, so I think it’s just repetition and getting comfortable and ready for opening night,” said Ungaro.

“The best advice I can give to the younger cast members is really to enjoy the time they are spending in Players Club and high school in general,” added Salcito. “It goes by so fast, so you have to appreciate everything for what it is.”
