In Case You Missed It: Eastchester High School Seniors Named 2022 Regeneron Scholars

Understanding the impacts of climate change on hurricanes. And decreasing socioeconomic barriers to mammogram services for New York City women.

 

Those were the ambitious goals that propelled two Eastchester High School seniors, Riley Gabrielle Keating and Ava Tsapatsaris, to be named Scholars in this year's Regeneron Science Talent Search, the nation’s oldest and most prestigious science and math competition.

 

Keating and Tsapatsaris are among 300 students selected from 603 high schools across 46 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and eight other countries. They were chosen based on their exceptional research skills, commitment to academics, innovative thinking and promise as scientists.

 

It is Keating, who, using the CHAZZ model, a statistical model used to predict the extratropical transition of tropical cyclones, conducted research proving that as the world warms, hurricanes and other tropical cyclones get stronger. Warmer climates provide more of the energy to fuel storms. Her simulations showed an increase in stronger hurricanes as warming continues.

 

Tsapatsaris's topic was quite different but of equal importance. In her study, she evaluated whether, with access to free screening services, uninsured women in New York City are able to successfully manage existing barriers to breast cancer screening. With permission to use de-identified data received from Project Renewal's ScanVan in 2019, she found that barriers to breast cancer screening include lack of medical insurance, limited access to care, and the absence of a primary care physician. The mobile mammography screening van successfully overcame such barriers providing these women with vital breast cancer screenings and follow up care.
