Congrats to Ava Tsapatsaris Genius Olympiad Gold Medalist!
The Genius Olympiad is an international science competition that includes projects from 85 countries. Ava was 1/13 students from Westchester County and the only student from EHS nominated to participate in the Genius Olympiad. For the Genius Olympiad, she presented her research on Project ScanVan: Mobile mammography services to decrease socioeconomic barriers and racial disparities among medically underserved women in NYC. Her research studies barriers to breast cancer screening faced by underserved women – barriers include but are limited to lack of health insurance, lack of transportation to screening a location and lack of citizenship. Additionally, her research also investigates solutions to help women manage these barriers. A solution that has proven to be successful is a mobile mammography van. In New York City, Project ScanVan is an example of a mobile mammography program.
At the Genius Olympiad, she was awarded the Gold Medal. The Gold Medal is awarded to the top 10% of the participants.
